Great Binfields Project Update
The expansion of Great Binfields Primary School will see the pupil numbers increase from 210 to 420 by Easter 2017.
Work started on site in February, with the staff car park relocated to allow for the building expansion. Refurbishments have taken place over the previous two summers, creating two classrooms within the original building footprint, with a further six classrooms to be provided in the new build. The new extension will also provide a flexible Learning Resource Centre, Music and Drama Studio, and office accommodation.
The new accommodation has been designed to reflect the ethos of the original building in its scale, layout and appearance. Building materials have been chosen to tie into the existing building fabric, whilst internally, the exposed timber frame and open plan learning environment will be familiar to the staff and pupils.
The central courtyard is to be expanded, with seating and planting creating diverse external learning environments, fully accessible to all.
The new accommodation has been engineered to be more energy sustainable, with greater levels of insulation, and efficient lighting and heating controls. The teaching spaces have been arranged to maximise natural light and ventilation, whilst an array of photo-voltaic panels on the south-facing roof will harness natural energy.
Works on site continue to progress well, with the external walls and roof being installed this autumn. Pupils have been given opportunities to engage with the project, with site visits and talks to learn about the various trades involved in the design and construction of buildings. The project team have also endeavoured to minimise disruption to the local community, staggering deliveries and keeping residents informed.
